Born in South Africa, Fashion Editor of InStyle UK – Robyn Kotze moved to London at the age of 13. Having did art and art history in her younger years, she always knew she wanted to work in the fashion industry and decided to pursue her passion there. With London having a strong influence in her choice of style, pages and editorial work, she explains that the London style is like no other. While it’s key to have the easy yet slightly undone look, London is best at mixing the new and exciting with the already elevated and sophisticated. Robyn further shares with us more about her personal style, her budding years in fashion and her take on grommets as an upcoming trend.
Tell us about your path into Fashion.
I did my art foundation at Chelsea College of Art and Design, then chose to do my BA at London College of Fashion but had interned throughout university as I knew how extremely important the actual experience was. There are a million and one girls out there wanting the same job, so experience and specific knowledge is key.
Going back to your early years, was creativity and fashion a part of your childhood?
My family is in the luxury jewellery business, so attention to detail has always been crucial from the sale itself to the final packaging. I'm the first within the family to be in fashion but hopefully not the last. I love what I do and I love fashion within London, but normally the creativity forms outside the city – by the sea or in the country. Which is probably influenced by my childhood in South Africa.
What inspires your sense of style?
I love older fashion imagery and anything that represents sophisticated comfort. My styling work is normally trend related yet mixed with classical and interesting cut pieces. I never like my style to look thought out, everything must be relaxed and of comfort. Both my work and style need to be effortless and of ease.
How has Natalie Hartley helped be a mentor to you?
Natalie has a very strong work ethic and taught me that going the extra mile not only pays off but will get you noticed for the right reasons. A combination of hard work, determination and having a good eye is key for working with someone like Natalie.
What do you think about the current grommets trend?
This is a great trend, it’s soon becoming the new stud! I love it as a trim or as a detail. It's still an embellishment, so I'd be careful on how much you wear. I personally would either opt for a grommet bag or shoe to not overload the full look.
How would you advice to style grommets?
If your grommets are on accessories, I'd style pinstripe wide leg trousers or a pair of navy mom jeans with a great oversized jumper and blanket scarf. This allows the grommet detail to not only lift the entire look, but keep it effortless at the same time.
